Finding Your Water Shut-Off
Short answer: most Abilene homes have a shut-off at the meter box near the street and often a second valve where the line enters the house. Find both before you need them.
Request a plumberAt the meter
The city meter box near the curb has a valve; a meter key may be needed.
At the house
Many homes have a valve where the line enters, often near the water heater or an outside wall.
How to close it
Turn clockwise until it stops.
Test it
Close and reopen the valve once a year so it doesn't seize.
Fixture valves
Toilets and sinks have their own small shut-offs.
Water heater
The cold supply valve on top stops water into the tank.
Label it
Tag the valve so everyone in the house can find it.
If it's stuck
Don't force it; a plumber can replace it.
Meter key
A simple meter key from a hardware store makes the curb valve much easier to turn in an emergency.
Teach the household
Show everyone old enough where the valve is and how to close it.
